Business Newsletter
Dear Sir or Madam,

I know what you did this summer. You probably used one of those many rainy days to see Barbie at the movies. At least that’s what the visitor figures suggest. Good story, most thought. More remarkable, perhaps, was the hype machine leading up to and during the film’s run: a number of trailers offered us glimpses into the stories, and confident storytelling whetted appetites for more.

It's no coincidence. Increasing spending on film ads by one percent increases revenue by 0.33 percent – nearly three times as much as in other industries – regardless of the general economic climate or film industry trends to boot. My colleagues at the universities of Cologne, Hamburg, Leipzig, and KU Leuven and I at KLU, were able to demonstrate this in a recent study. The best part: other industries can learn from this success and invest in good advertising more effectively. How? Find out here – or send me your personal story on the topic.

More practical research in this issue: A study by my colleague Prof. Kai Hoberg shows how business should enhance motivation to improve data reporting. In a glance at the work environment, managers’ preferred employees thwart their coworkers, my colleague Prof. Christian Tröster’s study shows, but how to praise staff properly? Last but not least, my colleague Prof. Alexander Himme’s investigation: Is marketing after announcing layoffs advisable?

I hope your own stories are about a successful year.

Yours,

Prof. Dr. Alexa Burmester
Assistant Professor of Applied Quantitative Methods
